As I write this, most of the free world is under various stages and levels of lockdown due to the covid-19 pandemic. Something that was unprecedented in my lifetime, and certainly not something I would ever have considered as a possibility a mere 7 months ago.
I found that I wanted to return to my Detroit Techno / acid origins, which, to me is a return to familiar ground where I don't have to consider the ramifications of all this, so for me, it's pure escapism.
I always remember watching those US cop shows like C.H.I.P.S, Starsky and Hutch, TJ Hooker etc... and hearing them using the term "Gone To Ground" to say that someone they were looking for had just vanished, so, in a very literal sense, and also in a musical one, I've gone "underground" and become a recluse as I made this album.

Carbinax brings us an elegant tribute to the greatest era of techno. When I say tribute, I should stress that many of these tracks could be plucked off the album and released 30 years ago—nobody would blink an eye.

Although clearly made using modern synths and gear, Carbinax’s attention to carefully capturing the spirit and tradition of each style is very apparent. This is a record made by someone who has immersed themselves in many hours of Chicago house and Detroit techno. Carbinax seemingly cannot resist adding IDM flourishes and tweaks here and there to different track elements, but those little stutters and glitches don’t for a moment break the spell of being immersed in 1990s Detroit styles.

Another nice thing is that this is not an old-school house album, or an old-school techno album, it’s a celebration of many classic styles, each track exploring a different classic genre—and there are a lot of tracks (16 in total). Everything from classic acid, to Detroit house, straight ahead techno, night-time cruising vibes, electro, early trance (pre-Balearic Ibiza), and everything in between, is fully represented in this collection.

Gone To Ground fits well with any collection of classic Jeff Mills, Kevin Saunderson, Underground Resistance, Drexciya and the like.
